Program Description Hostelling International coordinates the Marine Science Program at Fort MacArthur on behalf of the Los Angeles Unified School District, taking students to Royal Palms Beach, the Center for Marine Studies, the Marine Mammal Care Center, the Oiled Bird Center, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, and the Sea Education Afloat Boat. Emphasis is placed on marine science and environmental awareness. By using experiential (hands-on) education as a learning tool, classroom activities become life lessons and students learn first-hand their responsibility as good citizens. This experience is, for many students, their first encounter with the ocean environment, and teaches them relevant knowledge about the natural world around them. The curriculum is tailored to fit the group’s ability based on grade level. Students study rocky shores, sandy beaches, and salt-water marshes, as well as travel by boat to sample deep-water animals and contrast them to the different animals found on shore. The Marine Science Program takes place at the Hostelling International (HI) Los Angeles South Bay hostel in San Pedro. This facility provides a relaxed, friendly, and clean environment with stunning views near the Korean Friendship Bell.
General Information To qualify for one of the 3-day/2-night Marine Science Programs, teachers must have completed Summer Marine Science workshops with LAUSD’s Math, Science & Technology Center and be actively teaching Marine Science in the classroom. All meals, accommodations, buses, and activities are paid for, except the Sea Afloat Program on the last day. Each school is responsible for the fee to take part in the Sea Afloat Program (~$400). The HI-USA Vision is that “Hostellers become caring world citizens who are catalysts for intercultural exchange and understanding, and who are stewards of the earth.” Call Now To Reserve
